SOS for refugees in Bihać: fundraising campaign launched for the humanitarian emergency. Everyone’s support is essential
What is happening in the migrant camp of Bihać and in the Lipa camp, on the border between Bosnia and Croatia, in the woods, among snow, cold and mines—where, deprived of the most basic services such as water, electricity and heating, several thousand migrants, including women and children, have been living stuck for months—is unacceptable and unworthy not only of Italy, but also of the European Union, which bases its very existence on respect for human rights, including the right to asylum and reception.

In recent days, it has been reported that a group of Members of the European Parliament, including the doctor from Lampedusa Pietro Bartolo, who intended to visit and inspect this border area, were stopped by the Croatian police in violation of European rules. Such behavior is unacceptable. Faced with this violation of the most basic human rights, taking place just a short distance from us, it is necessary to react, so that indifference does not become complicity.

Thus, “Incontri del Mediterraneo“, the annual series of meetings on geopolitics and society in the Mediterranean area, in collaboration with Banca Malatestiana and the company Petroltecnica of Rimini, having verified the impossibility of sending food or other materials (as they would be blocked by Croatian police), have decided to join forces to launch a fundraising campaign to finance the purchase of:
- a field kitchen capable of preparing 1,000 meals per day, along with the necessary food supplies;
- 1,000 hygiene/health kits to be distributed to migrants in the camps, where water and electricity are lacking.
For a total amount of €6,000, to be raised by February 15, 2021.
A small but meaningful example of collaboration between an association, a company, and a financial institution toward a shared commitment to human solidarity. The funds will be sent and managed by the IPSIA BIH Acli/Caritas Association, which operates on the ground, in collaboration with the Red Cross of Bihać.
